Scenario 1
Around the age of 2 years old, Bianca was diagnosed with Prader-Willi syndrome. Her parents expressed great concern about her long-term development and frequently argued blaming the other as responsible for Bianca's genetically-based intellectual abnormality and behaviors. However, both of Bianca's parents are accomplished musicians and were pleasantly and unexpectedly suprised to see Bianca gravitate toward music. By age 4, they were able to enroll Bianca into piano lessons. By age 10, she was accompanying the school choir. At age 14, she asked to attend a special music high school. What would you tell Bianca's parents to help them better understand the origin of her diagnosis and why she may be responding as well as she is to music?
Scenario 2
After a difficult marriage, pregnancy and delivery, Jackie observed her infant, Kelly, immediately being given the Apgar and then again five minutes later where she was only told Kelly scored a 5. About two days, Jackie saw Kelly being tested again, this time with what the nurse told her was the NBAS and that Kelly did well. Jackie is very confused, worried, and does not understand what either of these tests are about nor what they mean for her or Kelly. She is also worried that these tests may have something to do with all of the things she went through throughout her pregnancy that she has yet to disclose. What would you tell Jackie to help her better understand these tests, Kelly's scores, and what this information means for her and Kelly's development?
