Why does 2(x+1)+x = 3x + 2 and not 4x + 2

my process is
1. 2(x+1)+x
2. 2x + 2x1 + 2x
3. add like terms, so 2x+2x + 2 = 4x + 2

but really it is 3x + 2, because step 2. should be (2x+2+x, which is (2x + (1)x) + 2, which is 3x+2)

I don't understand why it isn't 2x + 2x1 +2x if i'm using distributive property...why does the second 2x just stay as x if i have to distribute the 2 to each term?
