The illustration in the attached image depicts the replication process of DNA. DNA replication is a must prior to any cellular division. Before DNA replication starts, the double-stranded DNA must first unwind into two separate single strands that forms a Y-shaped replication fork that aids the synthesis of nucleotide bases. This unwinding process is carried out by an enzyme called DNA HELICASE.

After the separation of the DNA molecule, each separate single strand is then used as a template to synthesize another strand. The synthesis is done by DNA POLYMERASE enzyme, which adds nuclotides that are complementary to the ones it reads on the template strand i.e. A-T, G-C. At the end of the replication process, two (2) identical DNA molecules is produced with each consisting of one old strand and one newly synthesized strand.
