Many African colonies sent soldiers and resources to aid western nations,
such as France and Great Britain, victory in World War II and expected
independence in return for their sacrifice.
The participation of the European colonial powers holding African territories during the First World War had affected a large part of Africa in one way or another. In addition to economic exploitation to finance the war efforts of the colonial powers and fighting in Africa, a further element of Africa's involvement in the war was the voluntary and forced movement of soldiers and war workers in the hope of independence.
