Them out to seem a bit sociopathic. I think the author chose to end it this way because it shows that the children only used the man to fill their curiosity and turned away when he no longer held their amusement. Going back to the sociopathic tendencies, being that sociopaths use others for solely their own entertainment

In other words, a sociopath uses people for his/her benefit.  They deceive and manipulate others to obtain what they want.  As they do not feel remorse, it is hard for them to have emotional bonds with people. We can see how the children acted like sociopathic because there seems to be a lack of emotional bond and manipulation to obtain what they wanted, just like a sociopathic.
