There are a variety of similarities and differences between the chloroplast and the mitochondria, which include structure, function, contents, and more.
The Mitochondria and chloroplasts are both organelles present in most animal and/or plant cells. Some of the striking similarities in these organelles include but are not limited to:
- A double bi-lipid membrane surrounding the organelle
- The function of producing the energy required by the cell
- The presence of individual circular DNA, which alludes to a similar origin
- Similar Enzyme and ribosome contents.

Though the similarities between the two are vast, these organelles are far from identical. To list some of the noticeable differences:
- Structural differences, their internal structures are vastly different
- Mitochondria are found in all animal cells, whilst chloroplasts are primarily found in plant cells
- Mitochondria use cellular respiration to produce energy whereas chloroplasts rely on photosynthesis.
In regards to mitochondria and chloroplasts, the internal structures, along with the environment in which they are found and the processes used to produce energy show us entirely different organelles. However, upon further study, these organelles are revealed to have striking similarities in function, external structure, and contents.
