Why was the development of agriculture such a major turning point in the development of humans, their societies, and their settlements?

Traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyles were thrown away for more reliable food supply and permanent settlements. Agriculture also helped establish social classes. New technologies also developed due to the need for better tools for farming.
