The picture shows a composite shape. We don’t have a formula for finding the area of a shape like this, but we can break it into familiar shapes that we do have formulas for!

(a) Draw lines on the drawing to divide the shape into familiar parallelograms and
triangles.

(b) Find the area of each individual shape. Show your work!

Continue drawing the line with 6 in, you will notice it cuts the side of 16 in into 2 parts , the largest is 10 in & the smallest is 6 in, In short it cuts the figure into a rectangle & a right triangle:

area of right triangle = 6x (10-6) = 6 x 4 = 40 in²

area of rectangle (in fact it's a square) = 10 x 10 = 100 in²
